Common Admission Test, also known as CAT is a computerized MBA entrance test, designed to test the aptitude and comprehensive capabilities of a student. This test is one-way ticket to get admission into IIMs; it is also accepted by most renowned MBA colleges in India. More than 2.5 lakhs students apply for this test every year, making it the most applied for test for MBA entrance. The application or exam form filling process starts from the first week of August and the exam takes place in November. Being an online exam, there are about 400 test centers in more than 158 cities across India.

Before 2019, there were 100 questions for CAT and the time limit for completing the test was 3 hours. There were 2 slots for the exam, commonly said, the morning slot, and the evening slot.

From 2020 onwards there were changes in the pattern of CAT Exam. Now, there are 3 slots for the examination: morning, Afternoon, and Evening. The number of questions was reduced to 66 and the time allotted was also reduced to 2 hours.

The result of CAT is declared in the first week of January. This exam score in the form of percentile is accepted by most of the colleges offering MBA/PGDM courses. The top IIMs accepting CAT scores are; IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM CalcuttaIIM Lucknow, and IIM Indore. Some of the top non- IIMs that care accepting CAT Score are FMS New Delhi, IMI New Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, GIM Goa. 

CAT 2022

For CAT 2022, the form filling process will start from the first week of August, and the last day to fill the form will be the third week of September (tentative). There can be a further extension in the application date, as seen in the previous years. The admit card can be downloaded from the official site from the last week of October (tentative). This will be a 2-hour exam with a total of 66 questions to be answered. There will be three sections in the exam: Quantitative Ability (QA), Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation (LRDI), Reading Comprehension (RC).

The timing for the morning slot of CAT 2022 is 8:30 am to 10:30 am, the timing for the afternoon slot is 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm and the timing for the evening slot is 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

CAT APPLICATION PROCESS

The process of registration for CAT is simple and straightforward. The following are the steps for the application for CAT.

Step 1- Generate your login credentials at www.iimcat.ac.in

Step 2- Click on “REGISTERED CANDIDATES LOGIN” using your credentials. A new window will open

Step 3- Fill in the personal details like Name, Parents name, Gender, Category, Address, etc

Step 4- Upload documents like Photograph and signature NC-OBC/SC/ST/PWD certificate

Step 5- Enter details of class 10+2, Graduation like Marks/CGPA.

Step 6- Enter work Experience Details (If any)

Step 7- Select the programs or IIM colleges and select the city for interview

Step 8- Choose your nearest and most convenient City for the exam. You can choose 6 cities

Step 9- Pay the application fee using online method only. UPI, Net Banking, Google pay, Debit Card are all accepted modes of payment.

CAT 2022 RESERVATION CRITERIA:

As CAT is an online entrance exam to get admission into post graduate courses like MBA/PGDM, there is a minimum qualification that is necessary to get the admission. Anyone can apply for CAT exam if he /she had completed their graduation or in the final year of their bachelor’s degree.

The following is the detailed reservation criteria for 2022

  • Candidates applying for CAT 2022 should have completed their graduation with a minimum of 50% in aggregate for general category candidates and 45% aggregate for SC/ST/PWD candidates
  • Students with professional qualifications such as CA/CS/ICWA can also apply for CAT 2022
  • Students who are currently in their final year of their bachelor’s degree or are awaiting for their results can also appear for the exam
  • If the candidate graduation score is in the form of grades or CGPS, then the marks will be calculated by the methods as suggested by the institute/university.

CANDIDATES NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR CAT 2022 EXAM:

There are various situations where a candidate cannot apply for CAT 2022 exam. Some of them are:

  • If the candidate has not fulfilled the minimum marks required to apply for CAT, i.e. 50% for general category candidates or 45% for SC/ST/PWD candidates. The candidates who are in the final year of graduation and NOT have an average score of 50% for general category candidates or 45% for SC/ST/PWD candidates.
  • Candidates who are not in their final year of graduation or have not completed any professional degrees like CA/CS/ICWA cannot apply for CAT
  • If the bachelor’s degree of the candidate is not recognized by UGC/AICTE/MHRD.
